Mazda says the 2.2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder oil burner should arrive in dealerships by the second half of 2013. The Mazda6 is scheduled to arrive in the U.S. in January 2013 and will initially be sold with the automaker’s 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine rated at 184 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque (mated to a six-speed auto). Official performance figures aren’t out yet, but we expect the clean diesel to provides tons of torque and road-trip-worthy range (the Euro-spec model we drove a few months ago put out 173 hp). Better yet, it will be one of the more interesting engine choices in the midsize sedan segment, helping the Mazda6 stand out among its competitors.
Mazda also used the show to announce more details about its motorsports plans. Earlier this year the automaker said it would enter the Rolex Grand Am Series with a racecar powered by a 2.2-liter Skyactiv diesel. The donor car will be a Mazda6, which will be modified for racing duty in the GX class. The engine will be 60 percent stock (race rules state that certain items like the block cannot be modified). The turbo components, however, will be heavily tweaked, helping the engine produce a hearty 400 hp at 5500 rpm. If you’re curious to see how the engine performs, you can follow the racing series which starts January 26, 2013, at Daytona.
